Abstract
T ODAY, more than two years after Paul de Man's death, 17 years since its original publication, this famous essay seems more clearly than ever to be a key work. Not only is it the basis of de Man's own reinterpretation of Romanticism and subsequent theorizings, it has deeply and continually influenced other theorists and students of Romanticism. Despite all the attention it has received, The Rhetoric of Temporality still has large implications that remain unassimilated. I propose here to tease them out.
