Abstract

AbstractCritical mathematics education is concerned about all groups of students. The students could be those socially at risk who experience oppression, exploitation, and social injustice. They could also be students in conformable positions, who live in affluent environments and do not experience any lack of economic resources. It is important that this group of students also addresses cases of social injustice and comes to participate in a broader discussion of what social justice could mean. Critical mathematics education is also concerned about university students in mathematics. They might become part of the expertise that will bring mathematics into action and contribute to the power that can be exercised through such actions. It is important that university students in mathematics do not get inveigled into a banality of mathematical expertise, but become prepared for addressing different features of the mathematics-power relationship.KeywordsStudents at social risksStudents in conformable positionsUniversity students in mathematicsMathematics and powerBanality of mathematical expertise
