Abstract

H. Crapo raised in 1982 the following problem: do all retraction operators on a lattice form a lattice with respect to the pointwise order? Here a retraction operator means an order-preserving and idempotent map. In the present paper an example will be given to show that the answer to the problem is negative, and the existence of the join of two retraction operators will be characterized in terms of fixed points.
