Abstract

An all-optical power equalization scheme for mitigating atmospheric-turbulence-induced scintillation is proposed by selecting the static operating points depending on the pump current. Thanks to the role of power equalization mitigating the scintillation effect, the power fluctuation range is suppressed by more than 8 dB and scintillation index (SI) decreases by a factor of 10, and maintains stable performance under strong turbulence. The bit error rate (BER) test shows communication quality under the same received power can be significantly improved, and consequently the effective received power range is extended from 12 dB to 25.5 dB. Due to its turbulence tolerance and dynamic performance, our proposed power equalization scheme provides an effective solution to mitigate received power fluctuations for free space optical (FSO) communication.
