Abstract
In today's healthcare environment, the trend is one of increased specialization and subspecialization. Health care now comprises distinct specialties and consequently healthcare professionals have to have specific skills that require specialist education. The nursing profession is no exception. The move towards specialization has many benefits in that patients, on being admitted to a specialist unit, can expect to be cared for by healthcare professionals who are ‘expert’ in their particular needs.
