Abstract
The rise of ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) in modern lung transplantation has created the opportunity to further assess donor lungs, which is particularly useful for logistical reasons or in the case of otherwise discarded organs due to the well-known dilemma of low donor utilization rates in lung transplantation, with figures even as low as 25% acceptance for first-ranked candidates (1). EVLP carries promise for both lung evaluation and preservation. The circuit is also being studied for its potential as a platform of intervention for new treatments (2).
