Abstract

Ostomates are often reluctant to risk being exposed as having a stoma, and can find travelling, socialising or other public situations difficult. Stoma care nurses are able to use their expertise to build patients' confidence about travelling by imparting practical advice, helping draw up sensible plans and laying out progressive steps to confident travel. An extra supply of stoma appliances is essential. Stoma care routines may need to be adjusted, particularly if they involve urostomy leg bags or colostomy irrigation. The case of urostomate Mrs A shows how small steps can create confidence, while the case of Mrs B demonstrates how, even with two stomas, a confident, resourceful and organised ostomate can live an outgoing life. Although there is a wealth of advice available, there is scope for more research into its efficacy.
