Abstract

Purpose: Whole grain wheat and rye cereal are major sources of dietary fiber. Wheat, in particular, is a major source of fiber in the US. Whole grain cereal intake has been inversely associated with chronic disease risk. Similar relationships have been reported for incident symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) and knee pain persisting after adjustment for confounders. Total fiber intake assessed using food frequency questionnaires, has been reported to be inversely associated with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (KOA) risk in both the Framingham Osteoarthritis and the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) studies (Dai et al, ARD 2017).
