Abstract

Alkyl polyglycosides, which were first described approximately 100 years ago in the chemical literature, can now be produced on a large technical scale and are utilized in various different fields of application. A description is provided on the production of alkyl polyglycosides based on renewable raw materials such as coconut oil and starch and their application in cosmetics is discussed. The basic characteristics such as viscocity and foaming behaviour of the alkyl polyglycosides depending on their alkyl chain length as well as their advantageous use in cleaners and hair care preparations is discussed by evaluating the influence on the dermatological compatibility, hair tensile strength as well as wet combability and dry combability of hair. Due to their application profile alkyl polyglycosides which can be biologically degraded without residues represent an enrichment to the surfactant range in cosmetic industry.
