Abstract
1. An investigation was made of the alkenylation of o- and p-cresols and their methyl ethers with butadiene in presence of zinc chloride deposited on alumina, the cation exchanger KU-1, and ethyl hydrogen sulfate. 2. The reaction goes by direct C-alkenylation by the 1,4-addition of the cresol to butadiene. 3. The products of the alkenylation of cresols with butadiene are mono- and di-(2-butenyl)cresols and the cyclization products — substituted coumarans and chromans.
