Abstract
Several methods of using alkyl iodides as sources of alkyl radicals have been developped. The combination of enthalpic factors in generating alkyl radicals and polar factors in the reactivity of the radicals has allowed to develop a variety of selective syntheses. Particularly the alkyl radicals were generated by iodine abstraction from alkyl iodides by aryl radicals from aroylperoxides or diazonium salts and by the methyl radical from t-Bu00H, (t-Bu0 )2, DMSO, acetone, acetic acid, (MeC00)2. Nucleophilic and electrophilic radicals of any kind can be easily and selectively generated in this way: the first ones selectively react with electron-deficient substrates (heteroaromatic bases, pyrilium salts, diazonium salts, quinones, electronpoor olefins ), the second ones with electron-rich aromatics and olefins.
