Abstract

Dyers' Alkanet, the False Alcanna (Alcanna spuria) of the old pharmacopoeias*, is a common plant in many parts of southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It has a long and well-documented history in medicine and economic botany, and it is the conserved type of the conserved generic name Alkanna Tausch. In the circumstances one might reasonably assume that its scientific name would be soundly established and secure against change. Unfortunately, closer examination of the facts proves otherwise.
