Abstract

R & D activity on high quantum efficiency alkali antimonide photocathodes is in progress at Milano, in the context of the ARES program. Inside a preliminary preparation chamber, Cs 3Sb layers with quantum efficiency up to 9% (at λ = 543.5 nm) and a lifetime of several days have recently been produced on copper, stainless steel and niobium, using a reproducible deposition procedure adapted to the different substratum material. An advanced preparation chamber, with an improved vacuum system and the possibility to transfer cathodes to surface analysis equipment, under UHV conditions, is also discussed.
