Abstract

The effect of alkali-metal chemisorption on the surface electronic structure of Ta(110) is presented. A [ital d]-derived surface state on clean Ta(110) is strongly modified, as manifested by a level shift and lateral delocalization. Strong mixing between alkali-metal and substrate valence bands is observed. It is suggested that alkali-metal overlayers on the more complex metals have fundamentally different behavior than on simple metal substrates.
