Abstract

Chapter 24 reports conformational analyses of aliphatic polyesters. Conformational characteristics, intramolecular interactions, and configurational properties of biodegradable polyesters such as poly(glycolic acid) (PGA), poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(2-hydroxybutyrate) (P2HB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(ethylene succinate) (PES), and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) were investigated via NMR experiments and MO and RIS calculations. The biodegradation behaviors propounded by microbiologists on the basis of experiments using bacteria and enzymes as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the polyesters were fully explained in terms of their conformational characteristics.
