Abstract
We have measured the alignment of the Na+ 2p53s 1P1 and 3P1 states after 2p ionization by electron impact via the anisotropic intensity distribution of thefluorescence radiation at impact energies in the range from 38.7 to 400 eV. Cascadingtransitions, autoionizing as well as radiative transitions, populate indirectly the ionic states2p53s 1P1 and3P1 and thereby perturb the alignment produced by the direct ionization process at all impactenergies. Therefore, no quantitative conclusion about the contribution of partial wavesL in the ionization process can be drawn. Nevertheless, at the lowestimpact energy of 38.7 eV, the experimental alignment values of the1P1 and3P1 stateswith −0.28(4) and +0.11(6) still reflect the very different theoretical threshold values of−0.41 and+0.15 if onlythe L = 0 partial wave contributes in the ionization process.
