Abstract

The paper presents a novel design of interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) that can achieve improved utilization of its torque components. In conventional interior PMSM designs, the magnet torque and reluctance torque reach their maximum values at different torque angles. Therefore, the machine can only utilize a portion of its individual torque components. In the proposed design, the magnets and barriers are re-arranged in order to shift one of these components relative to the other, so that both the reluctance torque and magnet torque are maximized at the same torque angle. The barrier design also aims to maintain the reluctance torque magnitude of a conventional interior PMSM. As a result, the proposed machine design can achieve the same output torque using a lower permanent magnet volume.
