Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship, if any, between alienation and the decision to participate in physical activities programmes among Nigerian students. The null hypothesis tested was that there will be no relation ship between the two variables. Alienation was defined as a feeling of hopeless- ness, normlessness and social isolation. The null hypothesis was rejected at the 0.05 alpha level (critical value 0.25, df=161, P 0.05) Active involvement of the local communities' human resources in physical activities programmes' design, for mulation and implementation was recommended as a way of reducing the problems of alienation and hence nonparticipation in organized physical activities pro grammes in the country.
