Abstract

Between autumn and winter on Mars, the main constituent of the martian atmosphere, CO, condenses to form ice caps at both poles. In his Perspective, Forget discusses an analysis of the martian atmosphere by the Gamma Ray Spectrometer aboard Mars Odyssey, which reveals unexpected fluctuations in atmospheric composition that create weather with no equivalent on Earth.
