Abstract

Alien & Invasive Animals: a South African Perspective fills a considerable taxonomic gap in the South African literature, supplementing the existing publications on alien plants. This is the only book to date to document all the alien animals with free-living populations within South Africa, and one of very few, if any, such books globally. In field-guide format the authors document the alien fauna of South Africa, detailing their preferred habitat, biology, identification, pathways of introduction, impacts, and tried-and-tested options for their control. The book does particularly well by including the species that would otherwise go unnoticed, and it even contains a full list of each and every non-native critter that has been introduced as a biological control agent. The book was compiled by two accomplished University of Cape Town professors, who have sought out specialist contributions from 19 other taxonomic experts, providing in-depth understanding of each group and adding significantly to the credibility of the book.
