Abstract

This article balances and critically reviews the different uses and conceptions of State as a category in the studies devoted to the formation of the Argentine State during the period 1852-1880. From the bibliographical survey of the works produced between the last decades of the 19th century and the present day, the various approaches, arguments, and methodological tools are reviewed and the main perspectives on the Argentine State during its formative and consolidation years are analyzed. It also addresses both the consensus built along this historiographic route and the current historiographical problems and challenges for the elaboration of a synthesis on the state formation stage.
