Abstract

Organizations increasingly rely on algorithms for human resource (HR) management and decision-making. In this paper, we provide a detailed case study of the implementation of two HR algorithms in a major French digital company. We use diverse qualitative analyses to open the “black boxes” of the algorithms by regarding them as quasi-objects that circulate among a variety of actors, e.g., data scientists, HR practitioners and lawyers. By using mixed qualitative methods, we identify and discuss the key ethical challenges related to the phases of the development and implementation of the algorithms. We conclude by discussing how our results can help both academics and practitioners better understand the decision-making process in the creation of algorithms and the key ethical issues that are raised in this process.
