Abstract

1. 1. The alginase activity was determined in the digestive system of over forty species of marine invertebrates from various phyla. 2. 2. The activity was measured by the increase of reducing sugars in incubated mixtures; by absorption increase at 235 nm; and by the viscosity decrease of the alginate solution. 3. 3. The aliginases were found in certain Echinodermata, Bivalvia and Gastropoda. Maximum activity was detected in hepatopancreas of Mollusca of genera Littorina and Collisella and in the crystalline style of Mactra sulcataria and Spisula sachalinensis. 4. 4. In winter the activity disappears in the hepatopancreas of all the animals investigated, but retains in the crystalline style of bivalve Mollusca.
