Abstract

Alfred Wegener initiated many or the modern methods of transport and research in polar regions; he started the study of many problems of polar nature which are now extensively tackled and have in the meantime been partly solved. The article sketches the state of scientific polar exploration at the time of Wegener's activity; it deals briefly with h i s contributions to the knowledge of polar nature and summarises some recent activity in Greenland and Antarctica which is a continuation and expansion of Wegener's pioneer work in polar exploration and polar research.
