Abstract

A short biography of A. S. Kennard is presented which traces the origins of his pioneering interest in Quaternary non-marine Mollusca, the influence of his contemporaries, in particular B. B. Woodward, and the basis for his firm belief in monoglacialism. An assessment is made of his contribution to molluscan taxonomy, environmental archaeology and Quaternary stratigraphy in the light of present knowledge and methods. Kennard's interest in geology, except for a brief period towards the end of his life, was strictly amateur and was undertaken during his very restricted leisure time. Nevertheless he published no less than 250 papers at the rate of five a year between 1895 and 1945; a complete list of these is given in an appended bibliography. He joined the Geologists' Association in 1894 and remained an active member for over fifty years. He was elected its war-time president, an achievement that he considered the crowning glory of his career.
