Abstract
This chapter provides insight into the family background of the emperor Alexios I Komnenos and the origin of the Komnenoi aristocratic family as a whole. It further relates about early life stages of Alexios Komnenos, his basic biographic data, and possible level of education, especially in military matters with the aim to explain his rise to the position of a successful Byzantine general already at his early age. It also contains a brief overview of his military victories prior to his accession to the imperial throne and political connection within leading Byzantine aristocratic families during this period.
