Abstract

Alexander Trotter lived from 1857 to 1947. He was present at the birth of electrical engineering (which he said took place at the International Electrical Exhibition in Paris, in 1881), and throughout his working life he was at the centre of electrical developments. In retirement Trotter compiled copious reminiscences, apparently based on diaries kept throughout his life. These reminiscences, now in the lEE Archives, yield many insights into the early years of electrical engineering and the personalities involved.
