Abstract

Alexander Rankin Cameron was born 24 J a n u a r y 1927 in Toronto, Canada. He grew up in rural Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where he got acquainted with coal at an early age. One of his chores as a school boy was to take his turn coaxing a reluctant coal fire to life in the potbellied stove that heated the one room school he attended. After finishing High School in St. Peters, Nova Scotia, he went to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in 1952. Following graduation he spend the summer months at the Coal Research Laboratory of the Geological Survey of Canada in Sydney, Nova Scotia, under the direction of Peter A. Hacquebard. The coal petrology investigations at the Sydney laboratory aroused his keen interest, and he applied successfully for the Coal Science Scholarship of the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. This made it possible for him to go to The Pennsylvania State University in the fall of 1952 where he obtained a Research Assistantship. For two years he worked there at the Coal Research Section under the guidance of W. Spackman, who was a strong proponent of the transmittedlight petrographic examination of coal. These studies led to receiving his M.Sc. degree with a major in geology in 1954. While at Pennsylvania State University, Alexander Cameron maintained his association with the Geological Survey of Canada by spending the summer months at the Coal Research Laboratory at Sydney and subsequently at Ottawa. The Survey granted him educational leave, resulting in obtaining a Ph.D. degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1961. This opened the door for a permanent appointment with the Geological Survey of Canada as Research Scientist, which lasted until his retirement in 1992. Although he remained true to the Survey for so many years, it did not mean he stayed put in one location. In 1967 he returned for one year as visiting scientist to the Coal Research Group at Pennsylvania State University. Then
