Abstract

ABSTRACT Alcoholism in the Professions, by LeClair Bissell and Paul S. Haberman, is correctly billed as the first longitudinal study of professionals in Alcoholics Anonymous. The study concerns 407 physicians, dentists, nurses, attorneys, social workers, and college-educated women in other fields. Males were preponderant in medicine, dentistry, and law, females in the other professions. The subjects acknowledged that they were alcoholic and had been abstinent for at least one year. The authors emphasize that the sample is neither random nor self-selected but is rather a purposive sample with specified qualifications. The data permit informative comparisons between various professional groups as well as with a more generic group of New York City Alcoholics Anonymous members.The book is conveniently divided into ten sections, comprising two parts and four appendixes.
