Abstract

The consumption of alcohol has been a part of the cultural heritage of man for thousands of years. Although moderate alcohol consumption is reported to be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk, excessive and sustained drinking beyond the limits set by the Royal Colleges is damaging1. It is recommended that men should not drink more than 21 Units/weeks whereas women should not drink more than 14 Units/week1. A Unit is a standard amount of ethanol (usually 8 g) in half a pint of beer, a glass of wine or a measure of spirit or fortified wine.
