Abstract

T HE TRINIDAD CHRONICLE-NEWS HEADLINE on 18 August 1913 was typical homicide reporting in Las Animas County, Colorado: Union Miner Killed; Detective Shot, in Pistol Duel on Crowded Street.' In this particular case, G. W. Belcher and Walter Belk challenged union organizer Gerald Lippiatt on North Commercial Street in downtown Trinidad.2 All three drew revolvers, and the shooting ended with Lippiatt dead in the street from seven bullet wounds.3 Belcher received a graze on the leg. Holding to the code of the West, a coroner's inquest found the killing justifiable and released Belcher and Belk.4
