Abstract

Alcohol and Drug Problems in Womenis an excellent, well-organized book. Ambitious in scope, it is impressive in its accomplishment, which is to assess and report the state of knowledge about a badly neglected area, to clarify directions for further work, and to pose questions about why some beliefs persist and some areas are never studied. The book consists of 17 chapters, each extensively referenced with a summary by different authors on different topics. But it is more than a collection of papers. Dr Kalant's introduction and overview ties together the different sections and gives the whole coherence. Cohesion is further reinforced by the selection of authors and the framework of critical vision of the editorial advisory board of the Addiction Research Foundation, Toronto. The central point of the book is that drug and alcohol use and abuse are different for women than for men, that women's drug and alcohol
