Abstract

In order to improve the cutting efficiency of difficult-to cut materials, such as stainless steels and titanium alloys, the properties of newly developed (Al, Ti) N coated carbide endmills were evaluated through a variety of cutting tests. (Al, Ti) N coatings deposited by the cathodic arc ion plating method exhibited higher hardness and better oxidation resistance than TiN. Newly designed high helix type endmills were also evaluated, and the results showed that improved wear resistance, especially in the high speed machining of stainless steels, had been achieved. Overall, (Al, Ti) N coated carbide tools offer significantly better performance characteristics compared to tools coated with TiN.
