Abstract

We present the results of a series of comprehensive simulations comparing the performance of GaAs solar cells with periodic arrays of Au, Ag and Al nanoparticles on the front surface. Using optical and electronic calculations we show that the choice of scattering material is crucial to minimize parasitic losses and achieve broadband absorption enhancements. In particular, we demonstrate that by using Al nanoparticle arrays the optical absorption can be enhanced across a spectral range from 350-900 nm leading to an increase in power conversion efficiency of more than 45 % compared to a flat cell.
