Abstract

In the Masoretic (Tiberian) tradition, there are some forms in which the accentuation expresses a semantical or functional differentiation (e.g. w-qatálti— w-qataltí). This paper describes another group of such forms, the nifal wayyiqtol forms without endings. These forms are mostly milra‘, however some verbs are always mil’el, and some have both accentuations. The paper aims to give an explanation for these different accentuations. In my opinion, there is not a phonetic explanation for this. There seems to be a connection to the meaning: the active verbs prefer the mil‘el accentuation. On the other hand, there might be an influence for the milra‘ forms from other passive forms, especially in hofal. Diachronically there might be a connection with the different vocalization patterns of the accadic N-stem. Some forms might be vestiges of Gt-formations.
