Abstract

Current Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastric Cancer. Carcinomas of the stomach and esophagogastric junction are among the most frequent causes of death due to cancer worldwide. Despite curative resection, patients at early stages (II–III) show poor 5-year survival with a high risk for local recurrence, lymphogenic micrometastases, or distant metastases. In addition, the incidence of upper gastric and lower esophageal cancer has increased in recent years. Because of several positive changes correlated to early diagnosis and better treatment options, gastric cancer is a renewed challenge to many doctors and medical societies, particu larly for interdisciplinary teams. The article discusses the importance of improved diagnosis as well as perioperative und palliative therapies as they have been presented in the recent new German S3 guideline.
