Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem because of high incidence of the acute infections, and frequency and seriousness of their complications. One of the important steps in the prevention and control of STIs is education and counseling of persons at risk of those infections, especially the adolescents who are vulnerable. Modes of transmission of STIs could be easily explained with acronim OVAKO: O - oral sex, V - vaginal sex, A - anal sex, K - contact with infected blood and contaminated fomites, and O - from infected mother to child. Adopting the model of safe sexual behaviour, sexual education in the early school age, counseling of young people regarding STIs, reproductive health and permanent promotion of condom usage are the best ways for reducing the prevalence of STIs and an unwanted consequences.
