Abstract

Ronald L. Akers is an American criminologist best known as a sociological theorist of crime and deviance, and most especially for his criminological theory of social learning. This theory was derived from Edwin Sutherland's work on differential association and combined with general social behavioral principles. It has since come to be regarded as one of the staples of criminological thought, and has been successfully used to explain deviant behavior in more situations than almost any other criminological theory. Akers has also published some of the most well known criminological theory texts such as Deviant behavior and Criminological theories . He continues to contribute his expertise as a professor at the University of Florida in the Department of Sociology and Criminology and Law, where he has been a member of the faculty for more than 30 years.
