Abstract
Education has many micro and macro effects. For that reason many researchers have dealed with the topic “academic failure”. Academic failure was tried to be explained by many situations which can be related with the individual, family, environment, teacher, school and education system. However it is possible to indicate that family is the one which have the most impact on individuals. There are many studies and theories about the importance of the family in academic success. While some theories draw attention to the active role of the family in academic success, some theories emphasize the passive role of the family due to their the socio-economic status. On the other hand, the rejection of academic success as a result of the culture of the family is also another idea which is held by another theory. In this study the ideas of the four major academics will take place: “Social Capital Theory” by Coleman, “Social Reproduction Theory” by Bourdieu, “Language Codes Theory” by Bernstein and the work held by Paul Willis who takes place among the resistence theorists. This study is considered to be important in terms of presenting the views of four important figures regarding the effect of the family on academic failure.
