Abstract
Prof. Dr. Isidor Papo is our academician, general and one of the pioneers of cardiac surgery in Yugoslavia. He was the first to perform open heart surgery in 1951. With his tireless work, persistence and curiosity, he saved the lives of many people, enhanced Yugoslav surgery to one of the best in the world, and encouraged his students to continue his path and overcome it.
