Established in 1991, AJSLP has developed into a leading clinical journal in the area of speech-language pathology. Acceptance for MEDLINE indexing demonstrates the quality of the journal. MEDLINE contains over 12 million references to journal articles in the life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine going back to the 1960s. Citations cover over 4,600 journals and are published in 30 languages. Now included in MEDLINE indexing, articles published in AJSLP will reach many more readers. Richard K. Peach, editor of AJSLP, was thrilled to hear of the National Library of Medicine’s decision. “MEDLINE indexing will increase the interdisciplinary exposure of articles appearing in the journal, resulting in greater use of the findings published in these articles and a potentially greater impact factor for the journal,” he said. Marc Fey, chair of the ASHA Publications Board and former editor of AJSLP, added, “Some authors of reports that are appropriate for AJSLP have opted to send their work to MEDLINE-indexed journals instead of AJSLP on the grounds that MEDLINE indexing would make the article generally accessible to a wider audience. “There are also promotion and tenure committees that check MEDLINE listings as a way of evaluating the quality of an unknown journal,” Fey said. “This approval for MEDLINE indexing solidifies the success of AJSLP and paves the way for even greater things in the future.” Acceptance into MEDLINE will affect the number of submissions as well as allow others outside the profession to recognize the quality of AJSLP. This journal, along with ASHA’s three other journals, underwent a change from a paper-based to a Web-based submission and review process in 2002. AJSLP is also indexed in Exceptional Child Education Abstracts (print), Exceptional Child Education Resources, CINAHL, and PsychINFO. Two other ASHA journals, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research and the American Journal of Audiology are also indexed in MEDLINE. AJSLP is published four times a year.
