Abstract

Structural cells of the airways—in particular, epithelial cells—are increasingly appreciated as key players in the pathogenesis of asthma. Changes in the epithelial cells are a major feature of airway remodeling. Epithelial cells have also been shown to contribute to the initiation and maintenance of inflammatory responses.1
