Abstract

A mass disaster is a man-made or natural incident with more fatalities than the local resources can handle them or an airplane crash usually results in a more or less large number of deceased, with the political and social necessity of identification efforts. The characteristics of different types of incidents and the specific problems to be handled are described. Furthermore, the basic forensic methods for disaster victim identification are mentioned with special reference to forensic pathology, forensic odontology, radiology, fingerprinting, and molecular genetics.
