Abstract

Abstract : This Interim Report describes work done by Energy Research Corporation (ERC) in developing an aircraft battery state-of-charge indicator and charge control system. The basis for this system, developed by ERC, is a nickel-oxygen (NiO2) 'pilot' cell (0.374 Ah). This pilot cell is cycled in tandem with a nickel-cadmium battery. The oxygen pressure of the pilot cell is used to determine and control the state-of-charge of the nickel-cadmium battery. Nickel-cadmium batteries from different manufacturers were cycled using this pilot cell charge indication and control system. The performance of the pilot cell and a nickel-cadmium battery as a function of temperature were separately determined. Keywords: Nickel, Cadmium, State-of-Charge, Battery Charger, Oxygen, Charge Controller.
