Abstract

A method of particle charging by unipolar ion bombardment in an AC electric field was developed. This method allows particles to be charged up to the Pauthenier limit. The applied AC electric field allows many difficulties inherent to the charging in DC corona discharge to be overcome. Particles passing through the charger are not precipitated on one of the electrodes, but undergo only oscillations with a small amplitude. The charge acquired by any particle is uniquely related to its diameter so that this method of particle charging can be applied for particle size measurement.
