Abstract

The problem of the airborne noise transmitted outside the ship represents an acoustic pollution affecting the surrounding environment and third parties. Despite this type of emission can be quite annoying and has raised serious complaints from the inhabitants of areas close to ports, the acoustic impact of vessels, to date, has not been subjected to systematic control. In this context, recent is the new class notation issued by a classification society focusing on the characterization and evaluation of the ship source. This paper aims at analyzing the provisions of this new class notation from its effectiveness in characterizing the ship as a source of airborne noise radiated outside the vessel. Monitoring campaigns and results of numerical models will be exploited to identify a new method for verifying the notation in future applications.
