Abstract

Philadelphia, realizing the potential of its air transportation system, is working towards the improvement of the three most significant centers of airport activity: (1) The landing area is being prepared to provide additional capacity by construction of a parallel instrument runway which will increase the airport's practical capacity for aircraft landings and take-offs to 400,000 movements per year; (2) the passenger terminal is about to undergo a complete reconstruction which will yield a terminal complex at least five times as large as the existing terminal; and (3) the fast-growing pace of the air cargo industry is being met by construction of an air cargo city which will occupy an airport site of approximately 200 acres. Cargo City will support buildings and aircraft capable of handling in excess of twenty times the cargo capacity of Philadelphia's existing cargo facilities. Philadelphia has realized the importance associated with keeping pace with the air transportation requirements of its community.
