Abstract

The paper is focused on the History and Cultural Studies considering the Ainu photographic collection of the Hungarian explorer Barathosi Balogh Benedek (1870–1945), which was formed during his travel to Japan (Hokkaido) in the beginning of the XXth century. The historical and scientific context of this collection’s origin is analysed. Using the photographic materials of Barathosi Balogh Benedek, the authors examine particular characteristics of the ethnographic photography of the XIX–XX centuries as a valuable visual and anthropological source.
