Abstract

We can observe two stages in Cesaire’s discourse on mixed culture. First, the conscious or unconscious rejection of mixed culture (Cahier d’un retour au pays natal) helps the promotion of black values and prevents assimilation and alienation.Later, in Une Tempete, the three characters (Caliban, Prospero and Ariel) embody the three aspects of West Indian identity. However, recognizing the biologic existence of mixed blood people does not infer the existence of a civilization based on mixed cultures.
