Abstract

AIDS, a chronic fatal disease of epidemic proportion, presents many challenges for care to its victims and care providers. These include decreased access to health care, lack of adequate financial resources, and the current American health care system's inability to meet the complex needs of people with AIDS, especially the poor and homeless population. The need for alternative methods that offer care and services for this population is evident. This article describes a residential care facility that provides comprehensive unfragmented care as a method to meet some of these challenges. Because of its emphasis on healing as opposed to curing, the concepts of caring and spiritual support offer a tangible framework for delivery of health care in such a facility. The investigation into establishing a facility revealed the need for licensure, a tedious and challenging process that involves three mandatory meetings before submission for licensure. Another important consideration is that of finding consistent funding to support the continuation of the facility.
